Did you usher in the new year by going to the gym, eating a healthy meal, starting a new book, or telling a loved one you appreciate their company? One week into the new year, are you still doing these things, and how confident are you that you can keep up these good habits?
Many of us make New Year’s resolutions that we give up on all too easily. According to The Wall Street Journal, a recent survey shows more than 40 percent of those polled failed to keep up with their New Year’s resolutions in 20xx.
Another study of New Year’s resolutions shows a steep drop off in how long they’re kept up. Seventy-seven percent of the resolvers studied made it through a full week, whereas 55 percent stuck with their goals for a month. By June, only 40 percent of those who had made a New Year’s resolution were still sticking with the goal.
Why is it so hard to stick with a good habit? Alexcis Spencer Lopez, a life coach and therapist based in Arizona, US, says we are going about our New Year’s resolutions all wrong. Writing on news website Quartz, she says we are always trying to change the symptoms — whether it is losing weight or quitting smoking – instead of addressing the heart of the problem. Lopez says we need to resolve to make better resolutions.
We all want to overcome unhealthy habits. According to Lopez, unhealthy habits are what we do to distract from uncomfortable emotions that we don’t know how to deal with.
Resolving to stop the distracting behavior without first finding out what’s motivating it is dooming yourself to failure, she says. Lopez says you should resolve to reconnect with your emotional self to find out what’s driving you so that you can make a conscious decision to change your behavior.
Sounds like there will be a lot of soul-searching involved. Oh well, if you don’t want to make things too complicated, simply set an attainable goal for yourself. Typically, people fail to stick to their goals because their resolutions are too demanding or unrealistic, like committing to losing 20 kilos or quitting playing video games.
According to explanatory journalism website Vox.com, experts who study goal-setting all agree that the more manageable goals are the ones people actually succeed at attaining.
Another benefit of setting attainable goals is you can always up the ante. The person who commits to losing2 kilos and succeeds can set another target to lose a bit more weight. But the person who loses 2 kilos while committed to shedding 20 kilos is still far away from declaring a victory.

Christmas, annual Christian holiday commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. Most members of the Roman Catholic Church and followers of Protestantism celebrate Christmas on December 25, and many celebrate on the evening of December 24 as well. Members of the Eastern Orthodox Church usually delay their most important seasonal ceremonies until January 6, when they celebrate Epiphany, a commemoration of the baptism of Jesus. Epiphany also traditionally commemorates the arrival of the Three Wise Men of the East in Bethlehem (near Jerusalem, Israel), where they adored the infant Jesus and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The official Christmas season, popularly known as either Christmastide or the Twelve Days of Christmas, extends from the anniversary of Christ’s birth on December 25 to the feast of Epiphany on January 6. Christmas is based on the story of Jesus’ birth as described in the Gospel according to Matthew (see Matthew 1:18-2:12) and the Gospel according to Luke (see Luke 1:26-56). Roman Catholics first celebrated Christmas, then known as the Feast of the Nativity, as early as 336 ad. The word Christmas entered the English language sometime around 1050 as the Old English phrase Christes maesse, meaning festival of Christ. Scholars believe the frequently used shortened form of Christmas—Xmas—may have come into use in the 13th century. The X stands for the Greek letter chi, an abbreviation of Khristos (Christ), and also represents the cross on which Jesus was crucified.

Christmas Day-December 25-which celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, the founder of the Christian religion, is the biggest and best-loved holiday in the United States.
According to the Bible, the holy book of Christians, God decided to allow his only son, Jesus Christ, to be born to a human mother and live on earth so that people could understand God better and learn to love God and each other more. "Christmas"- meaning "celebration of Christ "- honors the time when Jesus was born to a young Jewish woman Mary.
Mary was engaged to be married to Joseph, a carpenter, but before they came together, she was found to be with child. Because Joseph, her husband, was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
Although the exact date of the birth of Jesus nearly 2,000 years ago is not known, the calendar on the supposed date divides all time into B.C. (Before Christ )and A.D. ( a Latin phrase, Anno Domini, "in the year of our Lord.")For the first 300 years, Jesus' birthday was celebrated on different dates. Finally, in the year 354, church leaders chose December 25 as his birthday.

The name Christmas is short for 'Christ's Mass'. A Mass is a kind of Church service. Christmas is a religious festival. It is the day we celebrate as the birthday of Jesus.
There are special Christmas services in Christian churches all over the world. But many of the festivities of Christmas do not have anything to do with religion. Exchanging gifts and sending Christmas cards are the modern ways of celebrating the Christmas in the world.
The birth of Jesus had a story: In Nazareth, a city of Galilee. The virgin's name was Mary was betrothed to Joseph. Before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband was minded to put her away secretly. While he thought about these things, Gabriel, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and told him did not be afraid to take Mary as wife. And Mary will bring forth a Son, and he shall call his name, Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.
Before Jesus births, Joseph and Mary came to Quintus was governing Syria. So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city. Joseph also went up out of Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and of the lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. So it was that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
And that, Christmas is the feast of the nativity of Jesus, is on 25th, December every year. But nobody know the actual birthday of Jesus. And the Christmas has become popular when Christmas cards appeared in 1846 and the concept of a jolly Santa Claus was first made popular in nineteenth Century.

Christmas Miracles
Christmas is a time for miracles. It is also a time when the dull things of daily life and the forecast of human hature gives way to a spiritual awakening.Allow me to share with you one truly wonder of Christmas.
Our miracle story comes from an incident that occurred in Flanders, Belgium, at the dawn of World War I. On December 24th ,1914, German and English troops faced each other from the relative safety of their ditches across which no man's land lying between them. Suddenly, the silence was broken, not by gunfire, but by the strains of Silent Night arising from the German position. It wasn't long before the English troops responded with a Yuletide hymn of their own. Then an amazing sight surprised the eyes of the English soldiers. A German soldier holding a small tree arranged with lighted candles began to walk across the land toward the English lines. This miraculous scene occasioned the declaration of a truce followed by English and German troops greeting one another, exchanging small gifts and singing songs of Christmas. Word of this incredible phenomenon reached the High Command of both sides.
On Christmas Day, both armies moved from their positions to engage in the killing of war at other battlefields. However, on Christmas Eve 1914 on a field in Flanders, there was Peace on Earth.
Christmas is a truly amazing phenomenon. The day and season perpetuate a miraculous, historical event as an annual presence that challenges an often rough, cruel, and egotistical creature -- the human being -- to become open and amenable to their Creator's vision. The great miracle of Christmas continues in the performance of humane acts, moral honesty, and in the spiritual awareness of millions struggling to lead a life of grace.

the holiday called christmas is an amalgam of many winter holidays from around the world. the name is designated as a celebration of the birth of jesus, although the date is not recorded in the bible, and people at that time did not place particular important on birth dates. scientists say the actual date was june 17th, 2bc because of the appearance of the star that beckoned the magi. december 25th was set as the date for christmas in the 4th century by pope julius i as an attempt to christianize midwinter pagan holidays such as solstice and saturnalia. customs such as bringing evergreens inside, eating fat-laden foods, and hanging lights are universal responses to the cold, dark winter season. some of the stranger christmas traditions are remnants of those older pagan holidays, and some have been changed over the centuries until their origins are hard to discern. others were just made up to boost business!
st. nicholas, father christmas, or santa claus is the weirdest christmas tradition ever, but he is so well known and so well documented that his origins are beyond the scope of this particular post. as a tool to encourage good behavior in children, santa serves as the carrot, and krampus is the stick. krampus is the evil demon anti-santa, or maybe his evil twin. krampus night is celebrated on december 5th, the eve of st. nicholas day in austria and other parts of europe. people dress as krampus and roam the streets looking for someone to beat with a stick. since it is also a night for drinking, the beatings probably don’t hurt much.
2. caga tió
in english, caga tió is “the pooping log”. really. the catalan custom is still celebrated in spain, where you can buy your own el caga tió. the log is hollowed out, with legs and a face added. you must “feed” him every day beginning on december 8th. on christmas eve or christmas day, put him in the fireplace and beat him with sticks until he poops out small candies, fruits, and nuts. when he is through, the final object dropped is a salt herring, a garlic bulb, or an onion. oh yeah, there is a traditional song the family can sing to encourage the process.
poop log,
poop turrón,
hazelnuts and cottage cheese,
if you don’t poop well,
i’ll hit you with a stick,
poop log!
2 caga tió
3. caganer
another catalonian tradition is the caganer, a christmas statue found in nativity scenes in andorra and parts of spain, italy, and portugal. the scenes depict the entire town of bethlehem, and the caganer is usually tucked away in a corner, far from mary and joseph. the caganer needs privacy, because he is defecating. there are quite a few explanations for this custom, but none have been confirmed as the original source. caganers have been used for at least a couple hundred years. you can even buy caganers that resemble modern-day celebrities. (image by flickr users clare_and_ben.)
3 caganer
4. the pickle ornament
the story goes that when german families decorate the christmas tree, the last ornament to be hung is the christmas pickle -usually a blown glass ornament that may have been passed down through generations. it is tucked away in a hard-to-see spot (it is green, after all). the first child who finds the pickle on christmas morning gets a special gift and good luck all the next year. the trouble with this legend is that people in germany were unfamiliar with it. glass tree ornaments were indeed made in germany, in the shape of fruits and vegetables and other objects. these ornaments became very popular in america when f.w. woolworth began importing them in the 1880s. an old german legend no doubt helped to sell more glass ornaments!
5. kentucky fried chicken
the celebration of christmas in asia usually involves imported western traditions, but in japan those traditions have been shaped by commercial interests. the holiday places special emphasis on romantic love, so it’s a day to spend with a sweetheart or spouse. bakeries sell christmas cakes as traditional sweetheart treats. and you might have to make reservations to get a table at kfc. yes, kentucky fried chicken. the fast food franchise let it be known that fried chicken is traditional for the christmas feast. and so it is -in japan.
6. zwarte piet
zwarte piet, or black peter is santa’s helper in the netherlands. sinterklass arrives on the eve of st. nicholas day in a steamship with his slave zwarte piet, portrayed in public processions in several cities. since about 1850, children who don’t behave during the year were told that black peter might take them back to spain, where sinterklaas lives. the racist aspects of the custom have been downplayed in recent decades, and the tale of black peter now describes him as a chimney sweep instead of a slave, which explains the blackface. but charges of racism still follow black peter, as he is often portrayed with an afro and exaggerated features.
6 zwarte piet
7. tv yule log
the yule log is a tradition that dates back hundreds of years. the yule log on tv is a relatively new tradition for those who have no fireplace to burn their own log. wpix in new york has broadcast 24 hours of a burning fireplace on christmas eve and christmas day since 1966. the original film was shot at gracie mansion, but a carpet fire during the first filming made the mayor wary of a reshoot a few years later, so the loop seen now was filmed in california.
8. mari lwyd
mari lwyd, an old midwinter custom in wales, is a holdover from pagan celebrations before christmas was introduced. mari lwyd means “gray mare” in english.
in its purest form (still to be seen at llangynwyd, near maesteg, every new year’s day) the tradition involves the arrival of the horse and its party at the door of the house or pub, where they sing several introductory verses. then comes a battle of wits (known as pwnco) in which the people inside the door and the mari party outside exchange challenges and insults in rhyme. at the end of the battle, which can be as long as the creativity of the two parties holds out, the mari party enters with another song.
the horse in the above scenario is made of a horse’s skull attached to a pole. the person operating the horse is concealed by sheets, and sometimes has a contraption to work the horses jaw! (image by flickr user arosmae.)
8 mari lwyd

Christmas Day falls on the twenty-fifth of December. It is a very happy day for many boys and girls. Before the term ends in some schools, the children act a nativity or “birth” play, showing how Jesus was born in a stable.
On the twenty-fourth of December, all children are very excited. Usually they are sent to bed early so that their parents can get the presents ready. The younger children think that Father Christmas will come down the chimney or fireplace, so they hang up a sock for him to put presents in. The greedy ones even hang up a pillow-case or a sack to try to get more presents. Later that night, father or mother will put presents in the sock, and leave others at the side of the bed.
On Christmas morning, the children wake up very early. Some even turn on the light at two o‘clock, and most of them are awake by six o’clock, and the young ones play while the dinner is prepared. At about one o‘clock in the afternoon, the Christmas dinner is brought in. The turkey or chicken is quickly eaten. Children search in their Christmas pudding for new coins which are hidden in it. The rest of the day is full of games and eating until the happiest of all Christmas hollidays comes to an end.

Christmas is the most important festival in the western world. It falls on December 25th. When my mother and I stayed in America, we were invited by one of my mother's friends to have Christmas with an American family. We bought some presents for our American friends on our way to their house.
They had prepared different kinds of gifts for their family and guests when we got to their house, such as Christmas candles, cakes, cards, little toys, biscuits and so on. A Christmas tree was placed in the comer of the brilliant hall. How beautiful it was! We were impressed by these. We had a big meal. After dinner, they told us some interesting stories about Christmas. We learned that Christmas had something to do with God. We went to bed at midnight. Though we knew the Santa Claus was not true, we were still waiting for the Santa Claus with white beard to bring us presents. And we received many beautiful presents the next morning.
This Christmas was really unforgettable. Not only did I have a good time, but also I knew something about foreign culture.

I like Christmas, it is just like our Spring Festival.
Maybe the Spring Festival is much more important and interesting than Christmas, but I like Christmas Day better. Because we can spend time with our friends and classmates during Christmas. When it is snowy, Christmas becomes much more lovely, just like in fairytales. I can imagine I am in a fairytale, the girl who sold the matches is my friend, the ugly duck becoming more and more beautiful and so on. What a beautiful place! So we can also call Christmas “Snowy Lovely Day.”
On Christmas Day, shops are red and green. There are so many Christmas cards, Christmas hats, Christmas dolls and many colourful things. So shops look very beautiful. We can give a card or a doll to our friends and say “Merry Christmas.” By the way, I think studying can also become much more interesting.
Christmas is coming, it also means a new year will come. Let’s study harder to welcome the new year!

Some even turn on the light at two o'clock, and most of them are awake by six o'clock, and the young ones play while the dinner is prepared. At about one o'clock in the afternoon, the Christmas dinner is brought in. The turkey or chicken is quickly eaten. Children search in their Christmas pudding for new coins which are hidden in it. The rest of the day is full of games and eating until the happiest of all Christmas holidays comes to an end.
